Therefore, It’s important to know the right timing so that your long road trip won’t be wasted and it’s always nice to see more than one whale shark swimming around the boats.
They are also locally known as “Butanding”. They can be found playfully swimming with the tourist in a small Barangay of Tan-awan Oslob, south part of Cebu. Whale shark watching started on September 2011. Now, it become as one of the popular destination of tourist in Cebu. Although, it’s quite far from the city proper which is about 3 hours road trip but the long travel is worth it.
Butanding are really huge even bigger than the tourists’ boat and some are smaller. It holds many records for sheer size in the animal kingdom, most notably being by far the largest living non-mammalian vertebrate. Based on world record, there’s no tragic event noted of whale shark attacking humans. So, when you visit this place we encourage you to jump into the water and enjoy this experience with the Butandings.
If you don’t have a waterproof camera to capture the moment, you can pay extra for this and they will take your photos with the Butanding.
The best time to visit the Butandings are during weekdays and early morning around 9:00 am as there are fewer tourists and you got to enjoy swimming with them more. Based on our experience and according to people of the Barangay Tan-awan, if you are lucky there’s 4 of them and sometimes even more or less.
